Really enjoyed this blast from the past, all before I was born of course! I must say that despite the monumental advances in print technology there's still an essential need for the human eye (plus a skilled pair of hands and a decent brain!) at all stages of a job. I think printing can still be considered a craft, and perhaps the skill now lies in balancing technology/automation with hands-on work and common sense. I'm interested to know more about other print businesses in the UK and beyond ;)

A really interesting and enjoyable film. Quality printing is just as much a skilled craft today as it was back in 1947.

Yes, craftsmanship is a dying trait in our trade, as are the excellent bennies + pay. Almost zero formal training & apprentships (job security for ME, though!) We can't go back though.. There are still elements of creativeness in running a big press that are extremely satisfying.

Back then respect was automaticly given to the 'craftsmen'. I don't see that in today's world anymore, yet we produce higher quality and 80 times faster as back then in 1947.Compensation was loyal and a printer could feed his wife and five children royaly. Bring back those good old days please. |
