ive seen it done with fabric, a long board as long as you want a belt to be or sash. nails the width,yarn as string to one end to the other, and then weave in and out and bunch up the different colored strips of silk ribbon or fabric. Tie off each end and walla belt

I'm tempted to do this on a larger scale. I'm fairly untalented at knitting but have taken up weaving, so this is an interesting techinque.
